Amoxicillin 500mg for Bacterial Infections

Amoxicillin 500mg is an antibiotic that is well-known around the world due to its usefulness in treating a wide variety of bacterial infections.

What type of bacterial infections can amoxicillin 500mg treat?

Some of the many bacterial infections that amoxicillin 500mg can treat include the following:

  • Acute otitis media (infection/inflammation of the middle ear) – the first choice of treatment in this case would be amoxicillin 500mg.  In case amoxicillin 500mg was taken in the last 30 days and nothing happened, or there is a possibility of resistance, then other antibiotics would be recommended.
  • Pneumonia – pneumonia caused by bacteria can be relieved by taking amoxicillin 500mg.  It is the first line of treatment for community-acquired pneumonia in the United Kingdom.
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis or sore throat – a contagious sore throat infection caused by group A streptocci.  This condition usually resolves by itself within a few days.  However, treatment with amoxicillin 500mg can shorten the illness significantly and prevent further complications such as fever and throat abscesses from occurring.
  • Cellulitis – bacterial skin infection caused by streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus. The most common signs and symptoms include red areas which grow in size after a few days and swelling.  The infected area is typically painful.  Cellulitis can show up on any body part, particularly the legs and face.  Amoxicillin 500mg or other types of antibiotics can be used to treat cellulitis.

Aside from the bacterial infections mentioned above, amoxicillin 500mg can also be used to thwart off Streptococcus pneumonia and other bacterial infections in patients who have no more spleens, to thwart bacterial endocarditis in patients who are going to have their dental work done, and also for the treatment and prevention of anthrax.
